Profile

In the fall of 1953, a committee composed of the president of the Tyrolean Chamber of Labor, Josef Gansinger, the director of the Chamber of Commerce Otto Winter and Dr. Adolf Sollath, decided to establish an association of student dormitories. The purpose of this organization should be to provide affordable accommodation in Innsbruck to students who are children of workers. As early as 1956 the small 35-room Rapoldi dormitory in Innsbruck Kranebitten was opened. This dormitory was the first in Austria where both male and female students could live without having a goalkeeper. By using this system, it was possible to offer very low accommodation rates since then.In the following years, the following dormitories were opened: 1975-Adof Sollath Dormitory, 1981 Panorama Dormitory, 1986 Karwendel Dormitory 1, 1992 Karwendel Dormitory 2, 1994 Savoy Home, 1996 Dormitory Dr. Herta Firnberg, 1998 The Home of Dr. Karl Kunst, in 2007 the Hostel campus Sieglanger I and in 2008 the Dormitory Campus Sieglanger 2. These 10 dormitories have a total accommodation capacity of 760 seats. By using the principle of self-administration of hostels, prices have come to be kept low until today. The price of rents in WIST Innsbruck dormitories is between 129 € and 187 € for the double room and 145 € and 305 € for the single room per month. Very low operating and management costs are at the heart of our favourable offer. Student dormitories are economically managed by Willi Egger by using little staff.

The financing for the construction of the dormitories was carried out with the help of the federation, the construction assistance of Tirol buildings, bank loans and contributions of the association. There are no subsidies for management expenditure. Dormitories support themselves. Accommodation from one year to another depends on passing the exams during the academic year. The accomodated students come from states such as Voralberg, Tyrol, Salzburg, Oberösterreich, Kärnten as well as South Tyrol. Also, there are students who come to study through the ERASMUS program. There are also accommodated and supported by the Ministry of Education and Science, so that 26 persons from all over the world are currently accommodated.

During the summer, hotel activities are carried out, but study courses are also offered for students from America and the Far East.

All rooms have shower, WC, telephone, cable TV and internet accessibility as well as shared kitchens, living rooms, parking lots and so on.

Students are offered study counseling and events to get to know Tyrol.

The association is administered by a small committee under the leadership of Egger Willi as president.

Other associations of this kind are also in other university cities such as Vienna, Graz, Linz and Salzburg.

All these associations are independent.
